Throughout my battle with acne, and on my continuous journey towards great skin, I have always come back to the notion that to get the glow you are seeking, start from the inside (see what I did there?). From a very young age and now, my parents always ensure I eat wholesome meals that include a lot of vegetables and fruits. It was my endless hunger for “bad” foods that steered me in the way of acne, and tummy troubles. I do consider myself a foodie, and am always willing to try new foods, especially if they’re deep-fried (weakness). I was in denial when I had a horrible outbreak of cystic acne in my early twenties that it was not diet related, and now looking back, that is exactly what triggered it.
I know you have heard it time and time again that what you eat does not contribute to acne, and I am no doctor here, but I am calling it. It has everything to do with what you eat. Sure, some people are luckier than others and can consume fast food regularly and have great skin – I am not so lucky. Others may have hormonal imbalances or high amounts of stress, which both contribute to acne as well. Everyone is different and I realize that, so I would like to share with you what I consume to help keep my skin clear and maybe they will help you too.
1. A diet high in fiber
I like to eat steel cut oats in the morning, grind up flax seed and drink it with a little water and eat apples. You may find other sources of fiber that you enjoy, so regardless of what helps you feel better, keep going!
2. Drink 3 liters of water a day
I know you hear it all the time but it’s true! I have a reusable stainless steel water jug at my desk and I try to drink 3 of those a day. If it’s staring you in the face, you will use it, so make it accessible.
3. Eat your greens!
Spinach, kale, spring mix – whatever your choice is – eat lots of it! Greens are high in Vitamin A which contributes to skin health, amongst many more things. I use spinach in my smoothies, fry an egg on top of a bed of arugula (thanks Chrissy Teigen) and eat a salad with my meals.
4. Berries and Pomegranates – Antioxidants
Ever since a friend of mine mentioned that drinking Pomegranate juice helped her friend’s skin, I incorporated Pomegranate seeds into my diet. My parents love them too so we always have them in the house. I literally eat them with a spoon or make a fruit salad with berries and the pomegranate seeds.
5. Lemon Water
Every morning on an empty stomach, I squeeze half a lemon in a glass of water. I swear this helps me feel better and keep my skin clear. If I don’t have lemons, I used a table spoon of apple cider vinegar (I have noticed it also keeps the bloat at bay – bonus!).
6. Chrysanthemum tea
Chrysanthemum tea helps with inflammation through its cooling effect and helps detox your liver, spleen and kidneys. Please consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing. I drink a Chrysanthemum tea blend and it tastes similar to Chamomile tea.
I also avoid dairy (although pizza – I always give in to pizza) and run regularly. I hope you found this list helpful and try to incorporate some if not all into your daily routine. I love reading tips and lists like this on other blogs because even though I know better, it is a friendly reminder when I slip!
